From the earliest evidence, the Goddess shows a particular ability in gathering different cultural influences. Along with the importance on a local basis, this versatility gained the Goddess a distinguished attention by all the peoples fighting for sovereignity over Western Sicily. Hence the success of her worship in the whole Mediterranean sea, in the most varied cultural contexts.

Over the last twenty years, a debate has been developing among scholars of Roman religion about the «civic religion» model. In order to address this debate, the paper first provides an overview of common interpretations of Roman religion during the last two centuries and briefly explains how the model was born, starting from the work of Th. Mommsen and G. Wissowa. Recent criticism is then taken into account and also analysed in its connection
with the model’s premises. Finally, the paper outlines some methodological thoughts relevant to the development of a scientific study of Roman religion.
